Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. Have a seat and let’s talk about this and that while enjoying a cuppa. Undoubtedly, certainty is doubtful.
Tidbits from the year 1982
1982 is a most interesting year with the continuing change in technology and our buying habits. Smaller and less expensive gizmos are appearing which includes the first CD player sold in Japan. To put a pen to the technology trend, Time magazine named the man of the year The Computer.
The Weather Channel airs on cable for the first time. By the way, ladies quilted boots sold for $29.99, men’s boat shoes sold for $44.99. A severe recession begins in the US. To keep up with the news the first issue of USA Today is published.
Disney expands by opening the EPCOT ( Experimental Community Of Tomorrow). You can buy a ladies jumpsuit for $25.00. The largest cash robbery in the US in NY with $9.8 mil stolen from an armored car. The average cost of a new house in the US is $82,200., while the average annual income is $21,050. Tylenol capsules are laced with potassium cyanide killing 7. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC is dedicated.
TV viewers had an excellent variety of shows to watch such as – Magnum, PI, Dynasty, Falcon Crest, and Hill Street Blues. And for the moviegoers, there were E.T., Rocky III, On Golden Pond, Poltergeist, and Annie, just to name a few.
The world of music has a lot to offer with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder with “Ebony and Ivory”, the Steve Miller Band and “Abracadabra”, and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”. Music was going through major changes with the influx of electronics, rock, pop, new wave, disco, and reggae adding to and taking over some of the sounds of the soul artists.
Music’s message wasn’t as much in the lyrics as it was in the groove. Dancing was exciting, invigorating and electric. This was another special time in my life as I loved the dance scene and my independence. I was single, had a good job and just loving life. I had moved from the Miami area to Tampa, FL – another new city to explore and learn about.
No intellectual exercise
No wearing a bowtie
A year unutterably untucked
Technology melting the resolve
It’s easier to connect the dots
A cuppa will hit the spot
Let’s just enjoy the moment
Throw away the itinerary
Let nature take its course
Open the windows of opportunity
It’s a good year, just listen to the music
Put your ear to the ground
Let the vibes transcribe the sound
1982 a forward moving medley
A comforting confusion like pie ala mode

I’m sure TEFRA didn’t help matters much in the way of the recession…
The Tylenol poisonings happened in Chicago. I remember being at work and hearing about it. I think half the systems staff had some they threw away, just to be safe. They still haven’t caught the person who did it; sometimes I wonder if whoever it was did it to prove it could be done.

You make a good point. People do some crazy things and who knows the reasons why.

Eugenia, the music scene in the UK was starting to change in the UK in 1982 with the advancement of electronics. Bands like Soft Cell, OMD and Culture Club were coming to the fore. Thanks again for rejigging some great memories.
