Tidbits and Pieces- The Year 2003

2003 is the year of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

In General

2003 is the year of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, killing all 7 astronauts aboard; the Do Not Call List debuts with the intent to limit telemarketing calls; sky marshals are used on Aircraft to prevent terrorist attacks following 9/11; Apple launches iTunes; Concorde makes its last commercial flight; Harley Owners gather in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to celebrate 100 years of Harley-Davidson Motor Cycles.

Lance Armstrong wins his fifth Tour De France; Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected Governor of California; Roy Horn of the duo “Siegfried & Roy” is attacked by a white tiger leaving him partially paralyzed; Saddam Hussein is captured by U.S. forces

Massive quake shakes southeastern Iran killing over 40,000; a 104-degree heat wave in France kills approximately 5,000; Hurricane Isabel makes landfall in the Outer Banks of North Carolina claiming 40 lives and leaves six million people without power; a severe weather outbreak spawns 393 tornadoes in 19 states in the US.

Something Extra

Halloween falls on Oct 31st and is one of the oldest and one of the most popular celebrated days, second only to Christmas. Millions of people observe Halloween as if it is a holiday and dress up in costumes, have parties, and/or go trick-or-treating.

Besides being a day of fun, Halloween is also associated with evil spirits bringing on ghosts, goblins, witches and haunted houses. Pumpkins take on various personalities as jack-o-lanterns and found on window sills, porches, and various sites in neighborhoods and towns.

There are many versions of the meaning of Halloween and while some remain consistent, various cultures view Halloween differently yet traditional practices remain the same. Halloween, while viewed by some as all about creepiness and the dead, is also a meaningful time noting the end of the growing season and a sign the colder months are soon to be upon us.

Ghouls and goblins, their motives impugned

Wispy ghosts play games with the moon

Flurried remnants of time hitchin’ a ride

The witch on her broom beaming with pride

Her quest for peace a slippery slope

A world going sideways yet filled with hope

Well-spun character in the walk and the talk

A redefined hunch of squeak or squawk

The witch and the fairies upon her broom

Recast frowns into smiles as they vroom and zoom

Tis a Halloween wish while weaving this tale

Persuasions of serendipity shall avail

Really fun post to read. Love the throwback year idea too. Always feel we should reflect on things that have happened to remind us of events in history. Might even help prevent the same mistakes happening again in some areas!!

Nice to meet some new people to on Janices meet and greet too!

A great look back. It seems like these things are not that far in the past. It’s always good to look back at both the bad and the good. We can hopefully learn from our mistakes. I always love your Tuesday Chatter!

I loved iTunes when it debuted – but they’ve “improved” the iTunes Store over the years to the point where I find it a toleration and avoid visiting. The Do Not Call list was a great idea, but the marketing spammers seem to keep finding ways around it. NOW I want to add a Do Not Email list – lol. And they both need teeth.

I’m always shocked to read how long ago some “current events” have now become: Arnie’s election, Sadam’s capture, Roy’s attack – they all seem like they couldn’t possibly have been almost 15 years ago!

As ALWAYS, I love these posts, and especially look forward to the poems you add at the end. Happy Halloween!

It is always a pleasure when you visit. Yes, it seems the phone calls and emails never stop. We don’t have a land phone and I have a reject list set up on my cell phone. It’s crazy the amount of junk calls and junk email that we get. Happy Halloween.

Me too. I no longer pick up if the number’s not in my phone’s address book. And if they don’t leave a message in voicemail they will NEVER get through. If it sounds like marketing or phishing, it goes on my “blocked” list.

The best thing about Halloween is the candy but I wait until Nov 1 to buy it. 🙂 Thanks for the blogs to visit list. Fun to see new blogs.

Another excellent Tuesday Chatter Eugenia and Happy Halloween. In Ireland Halloween used to be celebrated as a time of love as it was believed it was the best time to find your soulmate.
