Tidbits and Pieces – The year 2008 (a leap year)

In General

A carry-over from 2007, property prices continue to fall in the US and Europe, resulting in a credit crisis for homeowners and financial institutions; the collapse of the US Housing Bubble most likely a major cause of the 2007-2009 recession in the US; the US allocates a $900 million bailout for loans related to the crisis.  The financial crisis impact created turmoil felt around the world.

Apple debuts their ultra-thin MacBook Air notebook (less than one inch thick); Microsoft attempts to buy Yahoo; the Honda FCX Clarity debuts, which is Honda’s zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle; YouTube hosts their largest live broadcast, YouTube Live.

After almost 50 years, Fidel Castro steps down as Cuba’s president due to poor health; the UN announces actor George Clooney as a UN messenger of peace; Vladimir Putin appointed as Russian Prime Minister; Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the US; Danica Patrick is the first female driver in history to win an Indy car race (Indy Japan 300).

US – “A Year of Extremes” – Hurricane Ike; Hurricane Gustav; severe flooding in the Midwest; Tropical Storm Fay making 4 Florida landfalls causes flooding and destruction; a parade of winter storms-an extreme snowy effect in Iowa, Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin; there are 1,692 tornadoes in the US; there is more snow taking aim at Houston and New Orleans.

Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar causing over 130,000 fatalities and leaving millions of people homeless

Music and Culture

2008 is the year of the Writers Guild of America strike affecting a large number of TV shows, which lasts almost 3 months.

Something Extra

Word of the week: persnickety (adjective)-placing too much emphasis on trivial or minor details; fussy. requiring a particularly precise or careful approach.

Origin: early 19th century (originally Scots)

Synonyms: anal, choosy, fastidious, fusspot, fussy, fussbudget, pettifogging, stickler.

Words that rhyme or nearly rhyme: dignity, rickety, hickory, tyranny, thickety, lickety, snippety, biggety.

Tuesday, December 5th is Repeal Day. If you enjoy a cocktail or two, then raise your glass in a toast with your favorite alcoholic beverage.

During the time between January 5th, 1919 and December 5th, 1933, alcohol was banned in America. The reasoning was to not promote drunkenness and put an end to crime.  However, due to the demand for alcohol, bootlegging became big business creating more of a problem than attempting to keep people from enjoying their libations.

Finally, the 18th Amendment was lifted therefore we celebrate repeal day! Clink!

Wazzzz up with being persnickety

Perhaps confused with your dignity

Current events make you snippety

But the paper dolls want credit to fix

And be part of the wannabe mix

Quite obviously a nix nix

Can’t be accused of being two-faced

No character lines to erase

Flimsy personality in typeface

Oh twiddle sticks and pick up sticks

Let the hoi polloi scold the lazy susan

For wantonly rotate mass confusion

 Offered options even though unproven

It’s time we raised the bar

Oh no, not by buying a new car

Or raising your glass in har de har

Keep in mind those in despair

Give a hand with intent to share

It’s only fair you show you care

So much happened in 2008 Eugenia, it is hard to believe it was 9 years ago. Some of the events still feel like they happened yesterday. Another excellent Tuesday Chatter.

Some years stand out more than others. I remember the financial crisis.

When you get to 2018, I think you can start working backwards — especially if you focus on arenas other than the ones you gave us working up (i.e., no weather or politics — something more like fashion, magazine headlines, education changes, architecture, etc.). I’ve really loved these!

I’m all for repeal day extending to legalizing marijuana, btw. Meanwhile, raise a glass of alcoholic nog for me – and have a wonderful holiday season.

Great suggestions and we’re on the same page. I’m leaning toward “On this Day in ______”, and highlight events such as headlines, fashion, music, etc., and working backward. I haven’t determined my start point.
