Highlights – The year 2010

In General

The financial crisis continues in the US and Europe; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is signed into law by President Obama; The Burj Khalifa, world’s tallest building, officially opens in Dubai at 829.8 m (2,722 ft)

Fashion

Flip-flops, ballerina flats, and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes were the latest trend in shoes; Keds was worn by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande; also popular were colored jeans, skinny jeans, capri pants, ankle length pants, and leggings; maxi and midi skirts were common with hemlines the longest since The Great Depression.  Layer shirts and T-shirts, graphic hoodies, and neon colors were the current styles for men and women. Fashion in 2010 was a mix of yesteryear and alternative fashions.

People

David Cameron becomes the Prime Minister of the UK; Prince William and Kate Middleton announce their engagement.

Tech

Apple debuts the iPhone 4 but with issues; Apple debuts the iPad taking the touch screen technology to new levels; Android phones begin to outsell Apple phones.

Music and Culture

Simon Cowell leaves American Idol; 44th CMT Awards won by Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and Miranda Lambert.

Weather

Quake hits Haiti devasting the capital Port-au-Prince – approximately 160,000 fatalities.

Word of the week

kaleidoscope (noun) a scene, situation, or experience that keeps changing and has many different aspects; a toy that shows changing patterns, consisting of a tube with colored pieces inside.

Words that rhyme or almost rhyme with kaleidoscope: devote, antidote, hygroscope, widest hope, horoscope, telescope, pious hopes, divided vote, guidance note.

Oh! Tweedledee and Tweedledum

A horoscope is like a kaleidoscope

 Changing situations that muddle mindsets

Experiences that have unlike aspects

Don’t let a tube with colored pieces inside

Determine the day the music died

Note fractals are never-ending patterns

Whether a left turn, right turn or U-turns

Let the randomness of life unravel

Map out journies that razzle-dazzle

If you don’t use your time wisely

At least keep it blithely tidy

  1. Eugenia,

Thanks for dropping by for a bit of Christmas cheer with today’s featured artists’ holiday album. I remember getting my first iPhone in 2010 and I wasn’t sure how much I’d like it but I’m totally hooked on Apple products. I’m lovin’ my iPhone 8! Ain’t technology cool? Have a very Merry little Christmas! 😉

  2. Another interest packed Tuesday Chatter Eugenia. David Cameron becoming Prime Minister (oh how we danced in the streets) seemed like a lifetime ago. Loved the poem.
