My experience of blogging over the last three months on WordPress – The good and the ethically questionable.

Learning to write

This is going to be a review of my experience of blogging and the word press platform, and how I have gone from 0-750+ followers in three months. I will pre-warn you that not everything I talk about is going to be in the realm of good ethical behaviour.

Things I have learned:

  • Tags are important

    • Ethically correct: Use all the tags you can and make them as relevant to your post as possible. This will get you views from the type of people you’re interested in.

    • Ethically dubious: Some tags have more viewers than others, for example, I am PhD student, and I include the tag PhD in my posts; however, this only has around twenty posts in it per day, so if I were feeling roguish and all I cared about were views, I would drop this for a tag with more traffic as views are views right? No…

Yes, I try to remember to do that because I feel it is more meaningful to the author.

Over the past year, I’ve made an effort in making my tags better suited to my post and even when I go back into old posts to correct broken links, etc then I try to take a moment to clean the tags up. I know this is very important for search engines and I prefer to make my tags relevant to its content. Thanks for sharing. Now, I’ll visit the originating site. 😉

I’ve learned how important tags are, as well. I’ve retagged my posts a few times. I wish I was aware of some of this advice early on but you know the old saying, live and learn.

There are tags I like to enclose (relevant to the post) and some just work their way in as I add the ones I want. I guess going about it scientifically would produce better results but like the original poster said, better to “tag” the audience you seek, than open the door to a deluge of … well, you get the drift 🙂 And Hi Eugenia hope all is well 🙂

Great post. Mine is still a baby blog, so having someone actually write about this topic is helpful to me! There are so many weird, gray areas!

I appreciate you sharing this, Eugenia. As I posted on the original blog, I wholeheartedly agree with some points, don’t completely agree with others, more importantly I learned something new 😀

I agree with you. We all have our own style and experiences with blogging. What works for some doesn’t work for others. Learning something new always helps. Thank you for joining in.
