Tuesday Chatter 88

14030-Beach-In-A-Jar

Please come in and welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. A place where the clock ticks backward and we can chat about what may or may not happen. We dwell on thought-provoking and undeniably doubtful drivel.

1988, an interesting year for technology with the first transatlantic cable which was able to carry 40,000 phone calls at the same time. Great strides being made by technology creating a more communicative world, however, not without increased vulnerability. The first major computer virus infects computers. The US Stealth Bomber debuts. Lazer eye surgery is invented.

NASA resumes the Space Shuttle Program 2 1/2 years after the Challenger disaster, the Summer Olympics are held in Soule, South Korea, the Winter Olympics are held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. US average cost of new house $91,600 and the average annual income $24,450. A Ford Taurus is $9,996. and it’s .91 per gal. to fill it up.

1988 was a good year for movies – Rain Man, Beetlejuice, Crocodile Dundee II, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Die Hard, to name a few. I saw Rain Man a few times and still feel the acting by Dustin Hoffman was superb.

I have a little bit of personal trivia to share and that is I met the black jack dealer that was in Rain Man. We traveled to Vegas frequently and met him while playing black jack before he had a role in the movie. Then we saw him again after the movie, and he was the same fun dealer with many new stories to tell.

I attached a name to my whacky poetry style – Knick Knack Yak!

 Ah, the beat goes on

That same old song

Needs to be restrung

Hey, I’ve just begun

Oh snap, get a grip

It’s gonna to be a long trip

Life has a two-fold meaning

We gotta keep singing

I feel the beat, it moves my feet

Don’t let the chinwag sag

It’s not cool when you brag

Be a dear, be sincere

This isn’t yesteryear

Don’t let words of ire

Fuel a senseless fire

Seek your inner soul

And let the social dice roll

Tuesday Chatter 87

Please come in and welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. A place where the clock ticks backward and we can chat about what may or may not happen. We dwell on thought-provoking and undeniably doubtful drivel.

The US population reaches approximately 244,000,000 and the world population is approximately 5,000,000,000. The long period of financial growth in the US is interrupted by a US Stock Market crash, which triggers stock market falls around the world. The gap continues to widen between the average cost of a new house at $92,000 and an average annual income of $24,000. The price of a new car is over $10,000. and to fill up your car is .89 a gallon.

A 5.0 earthquake shakes up 14 states in the US and in Canada, the Great Southern British Storm with hurricane force winds slam southern England, leaving a destructive path.

Kitty litter debuts in the US, as well as prozac. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? Remember the televangelist Jim Bakker scandal and The Simpsons? The Simpsons made their debut on TV in 1987.

Aretha Franklin, known as “The Queen of Soul” is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Aretha can still belt it out at 75 years old. One of her well-known songs, “Respect” is still heard today. The Fox Broadcasting Company makes its debut, which was founded in 1986. Michael Jackson comes out with his “Bad” album, and Janet Jackson debuts her “Let’s Wait Awhile” single.

Nothing major happened in my life in 1987. I lived in Hollywood, FL and while I loved the city, I didn’t care for the heat. So, I don’t have much yesteryear news about me, but some back in the day trivia – did you know Days of our Lives won The 3rd Soap Opera Digest Awards in 1987?

I wasn’t a daytime soap opera fan and I remember my mother wasn’t into these shows either. We preferred to listen music but some of the soaps have some real longevity for example, The Guiding Light. According to my sources, this show is the longest running soap touting more than 15,000 episodes. The show dropped (The) in the 1960s and is currently known as Guiding Light.

Some of the other long running soaps are As the World Turns, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, One Life to Live, All My Children, just to name a few. I don’t know what made me think of soap operas, and I don’t have a clue about the number of fans they draw but they obviously are a popular source of entertainment.

Aside from what you think

we could both be wrong

 There’ll be no win

without the big spin

Don’t copy/paste the same old song

Let’s shun insipid trepidation

defining The 3 Pillars of Persuasion

Make the best of your given situation

Life’s not pie ala mode, you know

Don’t ponder the drivel, just give it go

You know when your famous

When you can fold a fitted sheet

Hey, playground bully, you can take a seat!

No listening to your excuse

or taking your abuse

Do not machine wash or tumble dry?

There’s no reward for not being clean

It’s not for me to know and you to ask why

Is it knock knock or knick knack?

It’s the gasp I can’t grasp

I’m hitchin a ride over the moon

Hey, shut the light when you leave the room

Tuesday Chatter 65

While we’re having coffee, let’s take a break from what we can’t control. Sometimes pointless chatter can eventually take on a form of positive energy.

Let’s begin with some trivia relevant to January, which is coming to an end. I’m glad to see this month go – how about you? Besides some eventful happenings, I feel January is a rather dreary and drab month. But others may feel differently depending on their lifestyle and likes and dislikes, etc.

Monday, Jan. 30th is Bubble Wrap Day! Don’t you just love these unnecessary holidays? Who comes up with these ideas, anyway? Probably “they” – you know what I mean because we don’t know so we pin the blame on “they” for lack of a known entity.

Bubble wrap is used for protecting delicate items while in the process of being shipped. Now it’s touted for other uses, for example, a toy or a stress reliever. And here’s an interesting fact about Bubble Wrap…

Each year Bubble Wrap hosts a ‘Young Inventor’ award that encourages them to find ways to use Bubble Wrap outside of packaging. Whether you need a Bubble Wrap door cover to help you keep out the dings, or a Bubble Wrap cushy wheelchair to ensure your loved ones are safe from every danger, these young inventors work every year to try to create the newest Bubble Wrap rage.

The world isn’t a gift, you know

All tied up with a pretty bow

With how-tos on what to sow

Unfolding what we may reap

The unknown can make us weep

Sweeping ideas under the rug

Creativity forbade by the smug

A colorless world it would be

If not shared by you and me

Encasing the world in bubble wrap

Blurs the task for this and that

Our realization of imperfection

Will fuel throes of a revelation

By the way, the earth isn’t flat

Tuesday Chatter 86

Please come in and welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. A place where the clock ticks backward and we can chat about what may or may not happen. We dwell on thought-provoking and undeniably doubtful drivel.

1986, a troubled year with some of the worst tragedies in history. The explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger watched by people worldwide, killing all 7 astronauts aboard, the Soviet Nuclear disaster at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, and the mad cow disease in the UK are just a few of the horrific events that happened in 1986.

But a lot of interesting events occurred in 1986-  Hands Across America, a large public charity event is held in May. Approximately 6.5 million people participated. The $10. donations were given to local charities to fight poverty. Mike Tyson becomes the youngest Heavyweight Champion in history, the Oprah Winfrey Show makes its debut in the US, the Soviet Union launches it’s MIR space station, Richard Branson breaks the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic on his 72 ft powerboat, the Virgin Challenger II, smoking is banned on all public transport including trains, planes, buses, and coaches in the US.

Are we jealous or mediocre

No shows won’t know

Class not dismissed and on with the show

More than one hand to clap

Less than two fingers to snap

Great minds work trenches

No more room on benches

As we trolley through space

Last stop’s a perfect place

People hold hands across the land

We’ve much to give to help others live

There’s no smoking on that plane

Nor the bus nor the train

We’ve nuttin to lose and a lot to gain

No matter what we do there’s much askew

Have a nice day and toodle-loo

Tuesday Chatter 85

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. A place where we can chat about this and that. Thought-provoking and undeniably doubtful drivel.

Nineteen eighty-five, a busy year helping others stay alive. The Live Aid Concerts were held during July of 1985, which were a series of rock concerts to raise funds for famine relief and around the world, the first group of Japanese astronauts were selected, the comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes debuts in newspapers, the eastern US has the coldest winter in recorded history, the space shuttle Atlantis is launched, British scientists discover a hole in the earths ozone layer.

Route 66 is removed from the US highway system – The highway was established in 1926 and spanned 2,448 miles in length. It was the subject in many a song, TV show, film and literature. The highway traveled through states Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. It was a popular route from the 1920s to the 1960s. It was replaced by an Interstate system and fell into disrepair. It was officially removed from the US highway system in 1985

The movie “The Color Purple” premieres becoming the fourth highest grossing film in 1985, Coca-Cola debuts “New Coke”, Michael Jackson buys ATV music and all of the Beatles songs for $47 million, the cost of new house $89,330, the average income per year $22,100. average monthly rent $375., average price for a new car $9,005.

The compass has lost it way

For some a sun setting day

Living the moments thru magical lens

Hit the road in a Mercedes Benz

Shake a tail feather and go loop-de-loop

A sodapop world with a double dip scoop

Diners with a cuppa and culinary treats

Makes you wanna stay an take a seat

Memories to keep for show and tell

Life’s a hoot and downright swell

Turn by turn with lots of kicks

Memories fading in tattered pics

Gone is the legend, Route 66

Tuesday Chatter 84

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. A place where we can chat about this and that. Thought-provoking and undeniably doubtful drivel.

In nineteen eighty-four, the first untethered space walk for the US, the Space Shuttle Discovery Maiden flight for the US, genetic fingerprinting of DNA profiling was developed, the Apple McIntosh computer debuted for sale in January 1984, the Apple computer was mouse driven and had a built-in graphical user interface, Sony and Philips debuted the first commercial CD players.

Recession continues in the US, 70 US banks fail, average cost of a new house $86,730, average annual income $21,600, average monthly rent $350., a movie ticket is $2.50, ladies two-tone pumps $24.99, men’s striped polo $24.99, Twirly curls Barbie $10.99.

Michael Jackson’s album “Thriller” sells over 37 million copies, the MTV Music Awards began, top musicians from Great Britain and Ireland form “Band Aid” to record the single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” in a London studio with the intent to raise money and create awareness for famine and poverty in Ethiopia.

Tuning the forks of time

Life’s not a straight line

  Drunken words don’t rhyme

Let this roll around in your mouth

Before the crow flies south

Let your pen do the talking

Send insipidity walking

Make sure life begins

before it comes to an end

In our soda pop world we blunder

 Scattered ideas torn asunder

Tuesday Chatter 83

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. Have a seat and let’s talk about this and that while enjoying a cuppa. Undoubtedly, certainty is doubtful.

The great state of Texas gets hit with 127 mph winds and storm surges up to 12 feet thanks to Hurricane Alicia, world population is estimated at 4.72 billion, China’s population is estimated at 1 billion, a 5.2 earthquake shakes Central New York, unemployment rises to 12 million in the U.S.

Average Cost of new house $82,600.00, average annual income $21,070.00, average monthly rent $335.00, women’s jacket and skirt $60.00, men’s blazer and slacks $113.00.

Microsoft Word is released, Swatch debuted their first watches, Cabbage Patch dolls become a success, Motorola introduces the first mobile phones to the public in the U.S., seat belts become mandatory for drivers and front seat passengers in the UK, McDonald’s introduces the McNugget.

The final episode of M*A*S*H draws 125 million viewers, Fraggle Rock debuts on HBO during January of 1983 (the show was one of the first original shows on HBO – created and produced by Jim Henson).

1983, a glorius year for music! Michael Jackson with “Beat It” and Billie Jean”, and The Police with “Every Breath You Take”, Lionel Richie with “All Night Long”, just to name a few. And other names of the famous and fabulous-Duran Duran, Elton John, David Bowie, Culture Club, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Rod Stewart and many more. The stellar list of music and musicians seems endless making 1983 one of the best years in music.

Do we boogie or do the ballet

As the population rises each day

Mom nature’s huffing and puffing

Her skirt blowing in the wind

Poor souls in the path of her spin

Her ear to the ground, hey what’s that sound

A lotta shaking going on – oh woebegone!

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again

Don’t dip your toe unless you know

The clock ticks backward – tock ticks

One two three – pick up sticks

Something popped up on my Facebook page today

A reminder my birthday was yesterday

I didn’t get the memo and forgot to connect the dots

I’m an odd peg-leg living in the now

But there ain’t no sunshine until I learn how

Tuesday Chatter 82

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe. Have a seat and let’s talk about this and that while enjoying a cuppa. Undoubtedly, certainty is doubtful.

1982 is a most interesting year with the continuing change in technology and our buying habits. Smaller and less expensive gizmos are appearing which includes the first CD player sold in Japan. To put a pen to the technology trend, Time magazine named the man of the year The Computer.

The Weather Channel airs on cable for the first time. By the way, ladies quilted boots sold for $29.99, men’s boat shoes sold for $44.99. A Severe recession begins in the US. To keep up with the news the first issue of USA Today is published.

Disney expands by opening the EPCOT ( Experimental Community Of Tomorrow). You can buy a ladies jumpsuit for $25.00. The largest cash robbery in the US in NY with $9.8 mil stolen from an armored car. The average cost of a new house in the US is $82,200., while the average annual income is $21,050. Tylenol capsules are laced with potassium cyanide killing 7. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC is dedicated.

TV viewers had an excellent variety of shows to watch such as – Magnum, PI, Dynasty, Falcon Crest, and Hill Street Blues. And for the movie goers, there were E.T., Rocky III, On Golden Pond, Poltergeist and Annie, just to name a few.

The world of music has a lot to offer with Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder with “Ebony and Ivory”, the Steve Miller Band and “Abracadabra”, and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”. Music was going through major changes with the influx of electronics, rock, pop, new wave, disco, and reggae adding to and taking over some of the sounds of the soul artists.

Music’s message wasn’t as much in the lyrics as it was in the groove. Dancing was exciting, invigorating and electric. This was another special time in my life as I loved the dance scene and my independence. I was single, had a good job and just loving life. I had moved from the Miami area to Tampa, FL – another new city to explore and learn about.

No intellectual exercise

No wearing a bowtie

A year unutterably untucked

Technology melting the resolve

It’s easier to connect the dots

A cuppa will hit the spot

Let’s just enjoy the moment

Throw away the itinerary

Let nature take its course

Open the windows of opportunity

It’s a good year, just listen to the music

Put your ear to the ground

Let the vibes transcribe the sound

1982 a forward moving medley

A comforting confusion like pie ala mode

Tuesday Chatter 81

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe, where there’s nothing better than a thought-provoking chat over a great cuppa coffee. Let’s talk about this and that and figure out where it’s at or do we really want to know? Undoubtedly, certainty is doubtful.

The wreck of the Titanic is found, in the North Atlantic, Muhammad Ali retires with a career record of 55 wins and 5 defeats, Sandra Day O’Connor is nominated to become the first female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, the first American test-tube baby is born, Lady Diana Spencer marries Charles, Prince of Wales, scientists identify the AIDS virus, the term internet debuts, MS-DOS released by Microsoft.

It’s nineteen eighty-one with songs unsung

Inventors and techies becoming well-spun

Hey, stop and listen and spit out that gum

We got splashes of passion and destination addiction

When we will know if life’s fact of fiction

It’s stupid o’clock so there’s the contradiction

We still got inflation they didn’t get the sticky note

or was it they didn’t get the memo

Either way, costs keep rising

It’s the same old song and not surprising

Listen to the music and put your ear to the ground

The dots are connected proving the earth is round

I found my life in the lost and found

I don’t give a flip about your dip I sing to another tune

I want to be the man in the moon

and run away with the spoon

a gallon of gas $1.25.

1981 was an interesting year for celebrities, music, and movies. The Royal wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer took place. The wedding was quite the event and I remember being glued to the TV watching every minute of it along with an estimated 750 million people, worldwide.

Walter Cronkite signs off as anchorman of CBS Evening News, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison record a tribute to John Lennon, the song 9 to 5 recorded by Dolly Parton in December of 1980 makes it big in 1981, MTV (Music Television) is launched in August. I was a real fan of MTV, however, not so much now that they have changed by toning down their music video programming. They are more into a variety of original reality, comedy and drama programming, which they have lost my interest. Wikipedia offers a comprehensive article on MTV and I have included the link at the bottom of my post for anyone that wishes to read it. I enjoyed the article because it includes numerous links to the musicians and musical groups that had airplay on MTV.

Tuesday Chatter 80

Welcome to the Tuesday Chatter Cafe, where there’s nothing better than a thought-provoking chat over a great cuppa coffee. Let’s talk about this and that and figure out where it’s at or do we really want to know? Undoubtedly, certainty is doubtful.

Ronald Regan elected President of the US, Japan becomes the world’s largest auto producing country, Mariel boat lift a mass exodus of political refugees from Cuba to the US, Post-it notes make their debut in US stores, Beatle John Lennon is shot to death, the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas is destroyed by fire, 30% of US car sales are imports. CNN becomes the first 24 hr news station, Mount St. Helens erupts on May 18th in Washington killing 57, Hurricane Allen makes landfall on Haiti and Jamaica, first ever natural birth in captivity of a Giant panda in Mexico

Average cost of new house $68,700.00, average income per year $19,500.00, average monthly rent $300.00, cost of a gallon of gas $1.19, average cost new car $7,200.00

Latest Census – US Population is 226,504,825

Were you a fan of the TV soap opera series Dallas? If so you may remember 1980 was the year that millions of viewers tuned in to see who shot the lead character, J.R. Ewing.  The TV series Dallas aired from 1978 to 1991with 356 episodes.  I am not a person that watches much TV but this show held my interest for some time. I’ve included the link to the IMDb site featuring Dallas if you’re interested in reading about the series.

1980 was a sad year in music due to the loss of John Lennon. He was murdered by a crazed fan outside his Manhattan apartment. He was 40 years old – wow, too soon for such a talented artist.

There were some hot musical groups in 1980 from the UK and the US. I remember ABBA, Pink Floyd, Blondie, David Bowie, K.C. and The Sunshine Band, AC/DC, and Queen just to name a few. I saw K.C. and The Sunshine Band in concert at Disney World. Everyone was dancing to their contagious beat. I still get up and dance when I hear “Get Down Tonight”, “That’s the way I Like It”. and Shake Your Booty. Their combination of funk, R&B and disco are timeless.

Nineteen eighty, a seesaw year

Nine to five lives switch to second gear

Voyager 1 eyes Janus while cruising in space

The clock an hour late yet has no face

Regan’s a winner in the Presidential race

The journey through life’s a mighty cool ride

Paper doll people learning how to high five

Selfies not yet for that keepsake shot

The ante must be hefty to sweeten the pot

Gotta be sure to use a wide angle lens

So the world can see that Mercedes Benz

Holy moly and needles and pins

Mt. Helen spews messing up the sky

We lost John Lennon the guitar gently cried

Another misstep in life and don’t know why

Bitter ideas should roll around in the mouth

Before fractured thoughts hitchhike to the south

Why is life’s show and tell the same old song

When the show’s over there’s no righting the wrong
